Backcountry Hiking

Casa Sagrada is the perfect jump-off point for exploring one of the world's most diverse ecosystems. Head out through our valley and foothills rich with exotic flora and abundant bird life. Learn about Zapotec culture and village life as you hike past goatherds and giant cacti. You choose the pace from leisurely to vigorous.

Sacred Mountain Trek

From the terraces of Casa Sagrada, you can see Guia Betz, the sacred mountain that overlooks Teotitlan. If you want to challenge yourself, participate in a guided hike to the top of the sacred peak. The panoramic views of the valley and the high Sierras are worth every step !

Sierra Norte Mountains

Drive only 35 minutes from Casa Sagrada to 10,000 feet, entryway to the majestic Sierra Norte Mountains. Hiking couldn't be more exciting here; vast pine and oak forests, mammoth agaves, meadows of alpine wildflowers and an exhilarating ascent to the Mirador lookout peak.

Bird Watching Tours

The valley and mountains surrounding Teotitlan are a confirmed hotspot for birdwatching. The natural wetlands and diverse flora attract dozens of native birds and numerous migratory species. After a day in the field come back to Casa Sagrada where the birds delight in our native botanical garden.

Our principal ornithological specialist Manuel Grosselet has authored Aves de Oaxaca, and is currently participating in the Mexican National Commission for Natural Protected Areas.

Remote Mineral Springs

Spend the day hiking the breathtaking trails surrounding Hierve el Agua. Two impressive petrified waterfalls feed these mineral pools where the water descends 160 feet over rugged rock cliffs. Cool off with a swim in these natural formations, then enjoy your picnic lunch from Casa Sagrada while feasting on vistas from the top of the world.

Family Picnics

Take the kids, bring your camera and let one of our donkeys carry the picnic lunch. Our bilingual guide leads you along cobblestone lanes, past village homes, through hidden trails and into the hills. You'll enjoy a leisurely meal with family and friends in a shady grove surrounded by natural beauty and exotic flora and birdlife.
